Brooklyn Botanic Garden Herb and Vegetable garden
“The Herb Garden serves as a vibrant living classroom where the community can learn practical urban food gardening techniques and tips for making sustainable food choices. The garden is designed to be a decorative but utilitarian potager, or kitchen garden, that freely mixes medicinal and culinary herbs, vegetables, berries, fruit trees, and flowers.”

modern reinterpretation
Richard Hartlage led the design and development of the first new display garden at Brooklyn Botanic Garden since 1954. Created as a replacement for the original Herb Garden displaced by the new Visitor Center, this modern reinterpretation was designed and constructed in advance of the center's completion.
Richard Hartlage’s design set a bold new aesthetic direction that informed the broader master plan for the garden. Through visionary leadership and close collaboration with horticultural staff and donors, he created a dynamic space that has been widely embraced and is now a celebrated highlight of the garden.
