“... a multibillion-dollar infrastructure rebuild led by the landscape design.”
—Marshall Foster, Office of the Waterfront, in
The New York Times
Land Morphology collaborated with Field Operations, the project’s lead designer and urban planner, to provide planting design and soil specifications for Seattle’s transformative 1.5-mile, 26-block Waterfront Park. Stretching from Pioneer Square to Belltown, the project reimagines the city’s connection to Elliott Bay, weaving together urban vitality, ecological function, and cultural identity.
Each zone of the park is shaped by a distinct landscape character, responding to the surrounding neighborhoods and Seattle’s rich Puget Sound context. From the historic charm of Pioneer Square, through the dynamic Overlook Walk connection to Pike Place Market, and northward toward Belltown, the park’s landscapes create a seamless and diverse waterfront experience.
Land Morphology’s planting design emphasizes native and ornamental species that offer vibrant color, seasonal interest, and ecological benefit. Street trees, raised planters, and richly planted beds enhance comfort and beauty along the promenade, inviting visitors to linger and explore.
As a defining public realm project for the region, Seattle Waterfront Park demonstrates how planting design can elevate urban infrastructure, reinforce neighborhood identity, and contribute to a resilient and welcoming city.
