chambers creek regional park master plan

University Place, Washington

"Original industrial artifacts are thoughtfully repurposed throughout the park, weaving historical context into the visitor experience. "

—Richard Hartlage, Designer

The 25-acre master plan transforms a former gravel mine into a dynamic public park that celebrates the site's industrial past while embracing its natural setting along Puget Sound. Sculpted landforms—large, concave, scalloped mounds—recall the site's extraction history, grounding the design in place.

Key features include a dog park, ecological arboretum showcasing native Northwest flora, picnic shelter, playground, and a dramatic catwalk with viewing platform. A tunnel beneath the adjacent railroad connects visitors to a two-mile stretch of beach owned by Pierce County, enhancing accessibility and recreational opportunities.

Original industrial artifacts are thoughtfully repurposed throughout the park, weaving historical context into the visitor experience. The design balances active and passive recreation, anchoring the southern edge of Chambers Creek Properties and complementing the adjacent Chambers Bay Golf Course with a resilient and engaging landscape.
