Shore Blocks
Seattle, Washington
A MODERN Beach
Shore Blocks reflects the owners’ passion for modern design while restoring ecological function along the lake’s edge. A section of the bulkhead was removed to create a fish-friendly pocket beach, where locally sourced stone blocks echo the home’s rectilinear architecture and provide places for play, lounging, and wave attenuation. Native plantings and a gravel shoreline create a sustainable habitat for fish, birds, and pollinators, while offering effortless swimming access and boat launching.
Rectangular stone pavers connect the new beach to reimagined outdoor living areas, including a bluestone terrace with a custom fire feature and a renovated dining terrace overlooking the lake. Raised steel planters host an edible garden, while pollinator- and native-friendly plantings—such as hydrangeas, jasmine, shore pine, and sword fern—enrich the garden’s beauty and ecological vitality.
