Sunset Hill
Seattle, Washington
REFRESHED
The owners of Sunset Hill sought to refresh their established garden with an updated, cohesive design. The renovation focused on editing and refining the existing plant palette—removing overgrown shrubs, introducing greater plant diversity, and enhancing the garden’s summer color. The result is a lively, well-balanced composition that feels both renewed and timeless.
To enrich the outdoor experience, a new water feature adds ambient sound and visual interest, while a custom-designed arbor defines and shelters key gathering spaces. Constructed of steel and wood, the arbor reflects the architectural details of the home. Half of the structure features a solid roof, providing weather protection for the seating area adjacent to the existing fireplace. The other half transitions to an open lattice, offering dappled shade over the dining area.
The arbor’s clean, gridded lines evoke a mid-century sensibility, complementing the home’s architecture and framing views across Puget Sound. The resulting space is gracious yet intimate—perfect for dining al fresco and enjoying the sunset.
