2021 Award of Excellence: Gillian’s Garden

Gillian’s Garden received an Award of Excellence from the Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

This reimagined garden embraces a contemporary aesthetic through the thoughtful use of industrial materials. A gently sloping backyard was transformed into a series of terraced spaces, each nestled within lush plantings to create an intimate yet expansive feel. Designed to support the owner’s lifestyle, the garden offers areas for sunning, growing food, entertaining, and experimenting with new plants.

Terraces are defined by understated materials and detailed elements, including gabion retaining walls, a steel arbor, structured hedges, and atmospheric lighting—combining function with quiet elegance.
